Message Title: Who Sinned?
Big idea: Our questions should mature as we follow Christ.
9:1 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. 4 I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. 7 And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.
The suffering in this world is because this entire world is under the power of the devil & the kingdom of darkness.
1.Who can I help?
4 I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.
2. How can I serve?
The overarching model of following Christ is service.
Matthew 20:25 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. 26 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.
“It is ours, not to speculate, but to perform acts of mercy and love, according to the tenor of the gospel. Let us then be less inquisitive and more practical, less for cracking doctrinal nuts, and more for bringing forth the bread of life to the starving multitudes.” (Spurgeon)
5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
Jesus reveals & manifests the kingdom of God so people may ultimately see rightly & glorify God in His creation.
3. Where can I be a light?
Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed;
8 Therefore the neighbors and those who previously had seen that he was blind said, “Is not this he who sat and begged?” 9 Some said, “This is he.” Others said, “He is like him.” He said, “I am he.”
Discussion Questions
Look over these questions before your group time. Write down your answers or ideas for at least a few questions if not all. You may not get to every question during your time, but speak up if you want to talk about one of them in particular. Always try to start with question #1.
What stood out to you and/or what do you think God might be speaking about from this message?
Why do you think the disciples asked "Who sinned?" instead of "How can we help this man?" What does their question reveal?
How does the story of Adam and Eve choosing their own way instead of trusting God's word reflect struggles we might face in believing and obeying God?
Jesus said the man's blindness was an opportunity for "the works of God to be revealed." How does this perspective change the way we view people and difficult circumstances in our lives?
What do you think keeps people from really serving the Lord?
What are things that are "new and noticeable" about those who begin following Jesus?
