If you live in the Aliso Viejo area, you may look outside this week and see a bright, shining light coming from the top of a hill. This light on a hill is reminiscent of what happened just a couple thousand years ago... We celebrate the event every year, often attributing its importance to family, love, caring for others, and a time to give. Of course, Christmas is all of those things—but Christmas is so much more.
After hundreds of years awaiting the arrival of the Messiah, it happened during a dark, mysterious, and even subversive time. Some wisemen saw the rising of a star, and knew the promised Messiah had been born. Immediately, they sought Him out to worship Him (Matthew 2:2).
"After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshipped him. Then opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh." —Matthew 2:9-11
This bright, shining star was a declaration of Jesus' arrival. It was a sign to the world that the Light had finally come! Those who walk in darkness have seen a great light, and the wonderful thing is that we can't un-see it. The light you see outside your window will remain all week until Christmas, inviting you with the same invitation that Jesus offered years after His birth: "I Am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
In the midst of the darkness and confusion that seems to reign in our world, we're invited to walk in light and clarity. Are you suffering this Christmas? Come to the light. Are you worried and anxious? Ashamed or angry? Feeling tired or sad? The light has come to give you LIFE! Come and see it for yourself. Come and worship Him.
This Christmas season, don't miss out on the physical sign that's been given to you. Follow the example of the wisemen and shepherds, and seek out the Savior. When you know Jesus, His light shines in and through you, testifying of the good news of the Savior's arrival—a light to guide a lost world back home.
