God’s Secret Mission: Teaching Notes

Title: God’s Secret Mission

July 31st, 2022 | Pastor Jason Huffman

Big Idea:

My faith grows deeper when I know God’s deep love.

Ephesians 3:Though I am the least deserving of all God’s people, he graciously gave me the privilege of telling the Gentiles about the endless treasures available to them in Christ.

Paul didn’t think he was deserving of God’s love.

He had made some big mistakes and done some things that were pretty bad.

Paul wasn’t following God’s way…

…BUT GOD found Paul…

…and showed him His love and his purpose.

All of our lives contain this purpose as well.

I was chosen to explain to everyone this mysterious plan that God, the Creator of all things, had kept secret from the beginning. 10 God’s purpose in all this was to use the church to display his wisdom in its rich variety to all the unseen rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was his eternal plan, which he carried out through Christ Jesus our Lord.

God had a secret, mysterious mission…

Have you ever had something you wanted to keep a surprise?

Maybe a birthday present?

…Maybe like Diver Dan…

…you had a joke that you wanted to keep a surprise?

That is like God’s mysterious mission…

…It was a mystery to people…

…and sometimes God’s plan for our lives is also a mystery.

We don’t know what job we will have, where we will live, or who we will marry…things change and make we are unsure.

We don’t know what God has planned, but…

…We can be sure God loves us, and He has a plan!

And just like for Paul…

His plan is revealed to us through our relationship with Him.

God’s mission was for us to have a relationship with Him…

…But we were separated from Him by our sin.

…So God became a man and lived a life without sin so he could died and pay for our sin, the wrong things that we have done, so we could be with Him.

We must turn from our own way, and we put our trust in Him.

Then what?

12 Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.

We don’t have to be afraid, worried or shy with God.

We can come boldly and confidently to God ourselves.

13 So please don’t lose heart because of my trials here. I am suffering for you, so you should feel honored.

And sometimes, like for Paul things get hard, and life feels bad…

God is working out His plan!

He is working through our tough times, for us and for others!

14 When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, 15 the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth.

What is Paul going to pray?

16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.

God makes us strong inside.

God has all power, and He wants to share His power with us.

But He doesn’t share power just so we can flex our muscles.

He shares His power so that we can live for Him.

We don’t just need muscles on the outside…

…we need strength on the inside to be kind to people, to help those in need, to obey our parents, or parent our children.

Outside is where the temptations happen, but…

…Inside is where the choices are made.

17 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.

My faith grows deeper when I know God’s deep love.

When you trust Jesus, you become strong inside…

…and Paul gives us two pictures…

First… Jesus is at home in your heart.

…He is with you, He is close, He is inside our lives.

Second…Trusting God’s love is like a tree growing deep roots.

Wind may come, hard times may happen, but I am not shaken.

I am securely rooted in His love.

18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.

God says all believers should understand God’s love…

…That word understand means to “make it your own”.

We must make His love our own.

It is not enough to know “God is loving”…

…you must know He loves you!

What kind of love does He have for you?

How wide?

God’s love is so wide there is room for everyone.

Jesus is the way, and His love is so wide, anyone that wants to can come to Him.

His love is open for anyone.

How long?

There is never a time where His love for you will expire.

He always does and always will love you. Young or old.

His love is without limits of time.

How high?

God’s love is so high that it covers all my sin.

There is nothing that you can do that will separate you from His love. There are consequences for our decisions, there are difficulties in life, but He always wants the best for you.

His love is unconditional.

How deep?

God’s love is so deep you can never reach the bottom.

There is an endless supply. It never runs out.

His love is never-ending.

19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

Experiencing God’s love gives us life and power.

Knowing how much God loves us…

Understanding how great His love for us is…

And experiencing this great love is what…

… gives us the power to live a full, rich life.

I don’t have to worry about myself.

I don’t have to worry about the future.

I just remember His love and make it my own…

…HE LOVES ME!

We want to grow.

We want to be strong.

We want to be fulfilled and have purpose in our life.

And a huge part of that life is understanding how much God loves us and what kind of love He really has for us.
