A Present for You

If I am counting correctly, there are about 55 shopping days left till Christmas. And according to the retail folks who ought to know, we will probably each spend over $1000 on gifts for loved ones this year. (By the way, that’s up 4%! I am afraid that spiral is always spinning upward!)

If you are wondering what the hottest gifts are … there is the Baby Shark Coloring Book (be careful, are you humming the tune yet?), there is the mini waffle maker for the hungry among us, and the ever popular minimalist leather wallet for the guy who doesn’t have much cash left anyway.

But I digress. Our Bible story this week climaxed with a gift of another sort. David announced to the elders of Judah that he had a present for them from the plunder of the Lord’s enemies. (See I Sam. 30:26)

He was demonstrating an extremely generous spirit and a desire to bless his countrymen. In fact, that Hebrew word for “present” is usually translated “blessing.” He had something of tremendous value and he wanted to share it with those he cared about.

It is pretty obvious to see the reflections of this story in the New Testament.  Think about the familiar verse in John 3:16 — “For God so loved the world that he gave ….” And consider the words of Ephesians 2:8 —“For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God …”

God has been giving since the fall of Adam and Eve. He has been pursuing mankind with blessing after blessing. He promised a redeemer and He sent His son to do just that. He is the Hound of Heaven who is chasing down each and every one who will submit to His Lordship and receive His free gift of salvation.

As Michelle mentioned in last week’s On Course, “God beholds our worst and defines us by His best.” His best was an amazing gift of love. It is a present for us.

So, this week, let’s be faithful to pick up that gift. Unwrap it. Cherish it. Marvel in its value. Treasure its significance and share its worth with others. It is a present that we must pass along!
