“Just trust your training.”
These words echoed in my mind during the message this Sunday.
Growing up around athletics, the day of a great competition or race would bring about so many nerves. But each coach I had would say the exact same thing: “Trust the training.”
We were encouraged to think back on the long hours of practices, the times where we woke up at 6 A.M. to do 10 mile runs, or the countless drills and sprints that became second nature out on the track and field.
There was a certain assurance that came when you looked back on your training, and you decided to trust that all the work you put in actually would produce something good on the day of the race. Those long hours would be worth it, and the prize that awaited would soon be yours.
This mentality in sports really carries over to what we were talking about on Sunday…keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, fixed on the mission to which He has called us.
Like Pastor Jason encouraged, when we know Who we trust and follow, and when we know What our true purpose is…everything will fall into place.
The training we receive as believers is different from physical training on the track, but in the same way, our grit and grace was forged in the wee hours of the morning when no one else was looking. Our character was developed when our faith was tested. Our bibles became worn from pages read and tears that fell. And all this time, we have put in hours of sweet relationship with the only One who truly knows how to calm the storm.
In moments where the world is facing great unrest and tragedy, and especially in our nation, we must remember to “trust the training” that God has so carefully developed in us.
We know what to do moving forward, because we know the God we serve. He has poured countless hours into us, discipling us and getting us ready for this very moment. The right response is simply the Christ-like response. Let’s not over-complicate it…but instead, let’s step up to the call to encourage others and spread the gospel.
More than ever, as we face our current trials, let’s trust God’s training. Let’s stand on His Word as the ultimate truth to guide our lives, and let’s lead with intentional Christ-like words and actions that bring people to the ultimate question, “Tell me more about this Jesus.”
