God Rules

Stand on any elementary school playground for very long, and you may hear this retort: “Girls rule and boys drool!” Or maybe you might hear the version that goes like this, “Boys rule and girls drool!” Regardless of who is doing the drooling, kids start early establishing who is in control.

That process continues into adulthood. “Dominating Dans or Debbies” exist in all corners of our world. Attempting to feel better about themselves, these folks demand control. They like to think that they rule.

But as we saw in Daniel 7 last week, God actually rules, and we do not. He rules and we can trust Him. He rules and we can serve Him. And as Pastor Jason finished his thoughts, he commented, “The Ancient of Days is the God who rules.”

The “Ancient of Days” is one of several hundred names that is used to refer to God in His word. Those names represent the way He chooses to reveal Himself to us. They reflect His character and His nature.

We get a glimpse of the “Ancient of Days” in several places in the Bible. In Revelation chapter one, He is dressed in a robe and golden sash. His head and hair are white and his voice sounds like rushing waters (think huge waterfall!). Out of His mouth comes a double-edged sword and His face is as brilliant as the sun!

In Isaiah 6, He is seated high and exalted on His throne and His robe fills the whole temple. He is surrounded by angels who call out “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty…” The room is filled with smoke and Isaiah responds by shouting “Woe is me.” He understands that he is in the presence of Almighty God, the Ancient of Days.

Daniel also had the opportunity to peer down the hallway of time and see the Ancient of Days establish His rule. Daniel’s vision noted that God’s clothing was white as snow and his hair white like wool. He saw a river of fire running out of the throne room and thousands of His people gathered around the throne worshipping Him.

In each of these settings, the takeaway is the same. God rules. Once we acknowledge that truth, we are free to trust Him, to put our confidence in His Word and to serve Him with reckless abandonment.

So maybe this week, that school yard refrain ought to just be “God rules!” (Let’s ignore the drooling part…)
